Reasons Why Preventative Dentistry is Essential

Preventative dentistry is the practice of actively taking measures and looking after your teeth in order to keep them healthy. Regular action such as brushing your teeth in the morning and at night and flossing are pertinent examples.

Preventative dentistry is fundamentally the exercise of prevention to eliminate the need for a cure. If individuals are careful, then their teeth and gums will remain in good shape and they will not need to make an emergency appointment with the dentist for procedures like a cavity filling, root canals and teeth whitening. While regular visits to the dentist are recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), it will only be a formality if individuals are prudent.

Brush Daily and Properly

The foremost rule that individuals should adhere to stringently is brushing their teeth twice on a daily basis. Ideally, they should adopt the habit and encourage their children as well to brush in the morning when they wake up and at night before they go to sleep.

The ADA suggests that this should be done with fluoride toothpaste and a tooth brush that is not too hard on the teeth and gums. Additionally, the average tooth brush has a lifespan of two or three months. Individuals should replace existing tooth brushes with a new one when the bristles begin to fray, which means their tooth brush will be less effective.

While brushing your teeth should always be your first action in the morning, it is perhaps more important to brush at night. Neglecting this habit can have adverse effects on a person’s dental hygiene. Brushing at night eliminates the germs and plaque that accumulate throughout the day.

Additionally, the way a person brushes is of equal importance. Since it only takes up a couple of minutes, people should take their time and maneuver the tooth brush gently along their teeth, preferably in circular motions to remove maximum plaque. Ultimately, plaque that is not removed becomes more robust and is harder to displace. In extreme cases, it may lead to calcium build up and gingivitis (gum disease) as well.

Clean Your Tongue Too

Unfortunately, many individuals brush their teeth effectively but ignore their tongues in the process. They must ensure that their tongues are clean as well, since plaque can gather on the tongue as well. This can have consequences like bad breath and other oral issues. Therefore, individuals should carefully brush their tongue on every occasion they clean their teeth. They will be surprised with the results.

Flossing Is Essential

While the vast majority forgets to clean their tongues, others forego flossing entirely. Flossing is imperative in the aftermath of brushing since it acts as another shield against plaque and reaches the part that were either inaccessible by the bristles of a brush or simply were not cleaned.

Flossing stimulates the gums, lowers the amount of plaque inside the mouth and also reduces inflammation in the area as well. Flossing once a day is sufficient for individuals.
