The Toothache Lowdown

Most people think they know the cause of a toothache. Either they know they’ve cracked a tooth, or suspect they have a cavity. While these are common causes there are many reasons that might be contributing to your aching teeth. Visiting your dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups will help you stay on top of developing conditions.
Tooth decay and cavities are a number one reason for tooth pain once the decay has travelled into the tooth deep enough to reach the root. This is why brushing your teeth, regular cleanings, flossing properly, and fluoride usage are key in saving you from cavities.
One toothache cause you may not immediately suspect is gum disease. Periodontitis (gum disease) occurs when the bacteria build up in your gums so much that your body can’t fight them off. Periodontitis is far more common than people realize and can cause pain, swelling, or a bad taste in your mouth. If left untreated it can lead to an abscess.
An abscess can cause a tremendous toothache. An abscess is a full blown bacterial infection where the infection gathers at the base of the root of your tooth. When left untreated, this can turn into a serious health risk. Typically a tooth can be saved with a root canal and a crown, but sometimes the tooth will even need to be extracted.
Other common culprits for tooth aches are: temperature sensitivity, gum recession from over brushing, sinusitis, improper brushing/flossing, impacted wisdom teeth, or misaligned teeth. There are so many factors that contribute to keeping your smile bright and healthy.
